DAILY DEVOTIONS

Why Barnabas?

Scripture: Acts 11:24

"He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord."

I have recently been studying the ministry of Barnabas.  What an incredible servant!  His heart was not focused on the things of this world but instead on the souls of this world.  He surrendered his time, his talents, his finances, and his will to the great commission.   He offered up who he was and what he had to serve His God.  God used him to increase His Kingdom, minister to fellow Christians, and in turn, was an exemplary servant.

I would think there must have been some testing prior to his journey to Antioch.  I imagine his scenario would be very similar to the parable of the bags of gold in Matthew 25: 14-18.  After the master entrusted his servant with a modest amount of gold, the servant made wise choices and increased his investment.  The master with gratitude, exclaimed: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!"

Barnabas was at a place in his walk with Christ where he could be trusted with such an important ministry (investment in souls).

What an honour to be chosen.  Barnabas was by no means perfect, but he was proven to be faithful, honourable, generous, and accountable and because of these personal sacrifices and his obedience God used him in a profound way.

May we all strive to be worthy of such servanthood.

Prayer:

"Heavenly Father, help me to serve as Barnabas did.  Help me keep my eyes on the eternal prize planting seeds in the soil of your eternal Kingdom."
